Black Swamp Medicine Girls

Arts and Culture, Community

Location: Holgate Community Library, 204 Railway Ave, Holgate, OH 43527

The Black Swamp Medicine Girls started in 2016 and the plan was for their program to be a “one time” show. Sisters, Susan Wiesehan and Jeanne Caryer presented a brief history of medicine in the Great Black Swamp, quack medical treatments, and shared their vast collection of medical oddities and devices. Much to their surprise, the Black Swamp Medicine Girls have to date presented over 22 shows in Ohio in a variety of venues and formats. After a brief hiatus due to Covid, the Black Swamp Medicine Girls are back and are excited to entertain you with amazing, amusing, and sometimes gross treatments people have undergone to improve their health. Whether its radioactive water to cure arthritis or a lobotomy to ease your headache, their “Halloween Show” will offer a brief look into some of the most bizarre treatments patients endured searching for a cure for their disorder.
The Black Swamp Medicine Girls invite you to join them for a graphically compelling, often hilarious and occasionally horrifying exploration of medical history. There may be some terrifying detours along the way.
